Below is the chord diagram for the D Minor chord in the 1st position.

D – Root
F – Flat 3rd
A – 5th

When played on guitar, the notes are in this order D, A, D, F. The D is the Root note. F is the 3rd note in the D minor scale and the A is the 5th note in the D minor scale. Don’t be confused, third note doesn’t mean third note in the chord, it means third degree of the scale.

We only strum the top 4 strings, mute the other two strings. The D minor chord can be played in many places on the guitar. In this example, we are talking about the D minor in 1st or open position.
